Sulphur is an organosulfur compounds or metal sulfides with chemical formula S₈. It is also called brimstone, which means “burning stone”. It has a melting point of 112-120 °C. Sulphur is an allotropic nonmetallic element, occurring free in volcanic regions and in combined state in gypsum, pyrite, and galena. Many sulfur compounds are odoriferous, and the smells of odorized natural gas, skunk scent, grapefruit, and garlic are due to organosulfur compounds. The greatest commercial use of the element is the production of sulfuric acid for sulfate and phosphate fertilizers, and other chemical processes.
